Description

For a several months, I had advertised that I would perform a public ‘masturbation’ in the middle of a high traffic road. On the promised day, a large crowd gathered. But in the end, I did nothing. All of the people embarrassed at the same time, because they expected something from me.. In this ridiculous situation, they thought about themselves why they came here, and also they saw their own blackhearted and lascivious mind each other with my unexpected performance.

In the process of going on the project, I met a lot of obstacles.  For example, 1 hour before the opening the performance, I had been detained by some people who were from my university, and I who was the president of the Student Council in the Dept. of Sculpture had to go to the office of the president of the Hong-Ik University with my department head. And then they blamed me with unsuitable reasons to control my project in the room. Even in the small case, I felt the limitation of artistic expression. Although, however, they reproached me, lots of people gathered. What is worse, they who blamed me came there to see the weird action expected to me.

This was my first solo performance, “Freedom Exists or Not”, through which I questioned our society’s tacit consent of censorship against artistic expressions. Along with the performance, I also led a seminar with scholars who have the variety of background experiences on “The Limitations and Freedom in Artistic Expressions in Korea” simultaneously on-line and off-line.

After the project, Mr. Kwon who was the Exclusive Director of the HIBS, Hong-Ik Broadcasting System, fired from the authorities concerned, just because he supported my project. I am sorry to him, and also honor him who tried to change the negative atmosphere about the right of expression.
