Looking at Disability through Creative Senses

<thisAbility vs. Disability> is an international electronic art exhibition examining themes of human capability through creative transition of the senses. Come enjoy ten fascinating interactive electronic artworks, including: a painting “seen” by your hand touching the wind; a digital musical instrument played by facial gestures; a robot responding to your voice; a table converting your touch into light; a block transforming Braille into sound; and harmonic bells giving sound to your heartbeat. This show is a unique media art experience.

Just as all people have distinct figures, appearances and characteristics, that which we may call “disability” is but a difference, not a defect. This exhibition presents artworks that invite a reappraisal of disability.  Visitors enjoy creative alterations of auditory, visual and tactile sensations that may cause them to question themselves; in the process, they may also re-examine bases of their social judgments. These artworks can spark revelations that break social prejudice and affirm difference.

In Korea, since the late 1990s art society has sought new themes and expressive media to address the chaotic mix of contemporary life. Similarly, science and engineering have continued to develop toward better management of advancing technology.  Appropriately, electronic arts have received much attention worldwide. However, In the last ten years, exhibitions with themes such as ‘the harmony of art and science,’ ‘interactive communication,’ and ‘game play’ have focused only on aesthetic aspects, or the novelty of the genre itself. There has been a distinct lack of deeper consideration or examination of concrete socio-political issues.

Beyond pure expression, art may also stimulate our imagination and contribute to  extending our frame of thought. I hope that the exhibition <thisAbility vs. Disability> may help to roll back outdated notions of 'disability' in society, that we may embrace our diversity and understand each other through the heart.

전자예술 국제전시 : thisAbility vs. Disability
창의적 감각으로 장애를 만나다.

<thisAbility vs. Disability>는 창의적 감각 전이를 통해 바라보는 장애를 주제로 한 전자예술 국제전시회입니다. 이번 전시는 바람의 감촉을 통해 손으로 보는 그림, 얼굴을 움직여 연주하는 디지털 악기, 관객의 목소리를 움직임으로 표현하는 로봇, 손의 촉각을 빛으로 변환하는 테이블, 시각장애인의 점자를 소리로 말해 주는 장치, 관객의 심장박동으로 연주하는 화합의 종 등 국내외 전자예술가 총 열 팀의 흥미진진한 작품들을 한 자리에서 감상 할 수 있는 아주 특별한 기회입니다.

모든 사람이 서로 다른 외모와 성격을 갖고 있듯이, 장애 역시 결함이 아닌 ‘다름’입니다. 이를 다양성의 관점에서 접근하여 장애를 바라보는 새로운 시선들을 찾아보고자 이번 전시를 기획하였습니다. 관람객이 작품을 통해 시각과 청각 그리고 촉각을 넘나드는 창의적이고 다양한 감각 전이를 즐기는 동안, 장애와 비장애를 나누는 사회적 판단 기준들 역시 교란될 수 있을 것입니다. 이로 인해 모호해진 그 나눔의 경계가 장애의 있고 없고를 따져 만들어낸 기존의 사회적 편견을 허물 수 있는 열쇠로 작용하기를 바랍니다.

90년대 후반 이후, 대중에게 다가가기 위한 새로운 화두와 표현 매체를 찾아 나선 예술계의 상황과 일반인들에게 공학을 보다 친숙하게 알리려는 과학계의 분위기가 시기적으로 적절하게 맞물리면서, 전자예술은 자연스럽게 세상의 주목을 받아 왔습니다. 그러나 지난 십여 년간 ‘예술과 과학의 만남,’ ‘쌍방향 소통성,’ 그리고 ‘놀이와 게임’ 등을 화두로 내건 크고 작은 전시들은 테크놀로지의 미학적 해석과 그 새로움 자체에만 초점을 두면서, 컨텐츠 중심의 다원화나 보다 구체적인 사회/정치적 이슈들을 심도있게 다루는 것에는 소홀했던 것이 사실입니다.

미적 표현의 중요성 이상으로 예술이 가진 또 다른 중요한 의미는 인간의 상상력을 자극하여 사고의 틀을 확장하는데 있습니다. <thisAbility vs. Disability>전시가 우리 사회에 존재하는 ‘장애’에 대한 정형화된 사회적 고정관념을 깨고, 그로 인해 서로간의 다름을 가슴으로 인정하며 상대방을 이해하는데 보다 자유로운 시선을 얻을 수 있는 계기가 되길 바래봅니다.
